Slap ass friday

Slap Ass Friday is a puberty play that follows Kay, a young girl navigating “womanhood” in the early 2010s. The story begins with the chaotic, school-wide game “Slap Ass Friday,” where boys run around slapping girls on the butt. From there, Kay wrestles with the culture of the time—whiteness, thinness, big boobs, straight hair, and the constant oversexualization of women.

Her inner world comes to life on stage: a puberty picture book transforms into the “Vagina Monster,” who teaches Kay how to use a tampon for the first time, while a “Wiki-How” page springs alive to demonstrate giving a blowjob with a curling iron. Through humor and heart, the show traces Kay’s journey into womanhood, shaped by both the pressures of her peers and the boys who, for better or worse, were always present.

Kay speaks directly to the audience as if they were her diary, turning them into confidants instead of passive spectators. At its core, Slap Ass Friday reveals how not all survivors of sexual assault process or even recognize their experiences in the moment. Drawn from my own journals and those of close friends, the play captures real thoughts and feelings of adolescence while reframing them through comedy, creating space to process the hardships young women endure with honesty, relatability, resilience, and of course, humour.
