i wish my life were like a musical

From voice-straining high notes to limb-spraining high kicks, via on-stage smooches and off-stage feuds, multi-award-winning comedic musical revue I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical reveals everything you could want to know about being a musical theatre performer – if only any would admit it – plus everything about the devotees, detractors and disruptors they perform to. The show will be bringing its unique blend of wit, whimsy and warmth to the SoHo Playhouse in 2026.

Hailed as “a must-see from leading British musical creator Alexander S. Bermange” by EGOT-winning lyricist Tim Rice, I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical comedically covers the journey from wide-eyed drama school graduate right through to brattish diva, or past-it chorus member, or bitter has-been (or “never-was”).

This chronological caper through the highlights (and low points) of a musical theatre performer’s career unfolds by means of anecdotes, revelations and confessions – in song – that lift the lid on awful auditions, debilitating dance routines, mid-performance mishaps, stage-struck superfans, and backstage backstabbing – alongside celebrations of those magical moments that make it all seem worthwhile.

I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical boasts a West End Wilma Award for Best Edinburgh Fringe Show, an EFFTA (Edinburgh Fringe Fringe Theatre Award), a West End Wilma Award for Best Cabaret, a BroadwayWorld UK Award nomination for Theatrical Event of the Year, a Broadway World Scotland Award nomination for Best Musical Production, four Offies nominations including Best Musical Production, an Off Fest Award nomination, a West End Wilma Award nomination for Best Off-West End Show, and a Brighton Fringe Award nomination for Excellence.

I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical recently celebrated its debut cruise performances on board Cunard’s Queen Anne, prior to playing its fifth season at the Edinburgh Fringe. Productions have previously enjoyed successful runs in London and Edinburgh (with multiple revivals in both cities), Canada, South Korea, Switzerland, and on a tour of the UK and Ireland, and a specially filmed version of the show has been released for online streaming.

Composer and lyricist Alexander S. Bermange’s further credits encompass numerous musicals produced in London, around the UK and internationally, and many comic songs for the BBC. His album Wit & Whimsy reached no. 1 in the iTunes comedy album chart, and among the illustrious artists to have performed and recorded his work are Cynthia Erivo, Ramin Karimloo, Miriam Margolyes and Jak Malone.
