Him
Opens Valentine's Day: Feb 14th, Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8, Sat and Sun at 3
Coming off of a sold out run at the Cherry Lane theater!
Tickets $59.50, rear reserved $50
As much as you might understandably resent Clifford Streit — onetime glittering New York talent manager and social operator; producer, screenwriter and now stage director and playwright; and, according to his new play’s program, the inspiration for the character Stanford Blatch on “Sex and the City” — you have to hand it to the man: his “Him,” at the Cherry Lane in the West Village, is largely one tasty bonbon.
Misleadingly described by Mr. Streit in The Daily News as a gay-theme play for straights, it is nothing if not a gay-theme play for gay men, with so much in its favor that its one blemish is all the more damaging.
Pick almost any aspect of this production — about a screenwriter, Matthew (Todd Alan Crain), who almost loses his hunky actor boyfriend, Nick (Jon Fleming), to the film-industry closet — and you’ll find gold. Josh Iacovelli’s lighting and set design deftly captures high-rise Manhattan and poolside Hollywood. Juni Li’s sound design encompasses K. D. Lang, Stephen Sondheim and Lady Gaga.
Mr. Fleming, as the gay equivalent of Adrian Grenier’s movie star in “Entourage,” is, appropriately, dimmish beefcake. As his paramour, Mr. Crain (perhaps best known as Tucker Hope on IFC’s “Onion News Network”) is nuanced, intelligent, sympathetic, forceful. Mr. Streit’s direction is a cool breeze, while his script is a fireworks display of urbane one-liners.
But Nick’s agent, Margo — who, while coveting him, demands that he parade publicly with an actress to conceal his sexuality — is a promiscuous harpy, a drag-queen caricature portrayed by a woman (the brave Lindsay Goranson). Her comeuppance is mercilessly degrading.
The women of “Him” (including Roxi Sorina) are tramps and gold diggers, the male principals stainless paragons of romantic devotion. Misogyny gives the play’s bubbly Champagne a most bitter aftertaste."

The Canterbury Tales Remixed
Extended through Jan 29! Schedule is Wed, Thur, Fri, Sat @ 7:30PM, Sat & Sun @ 3PM. Tickets are $55 orch. and $39 rear.
The Canterbury Tales Remixed
Written and performed by Baba Brinkman
Featuring music and turn-tablism by Mr. Simmonds
Directed by Darren Lee Cole
Geoffrey Chaucer's timeless Canterbury Tales come to vivid life in an "entertaining and brilliant" (Time Out) virtuoso performance linking modern hip-hop lyrics with the greatest stories ever told. Framed by gripping re-imaginings of the epic poems Gilgamesh and Beowulf, Canadian literature scholar and rap dramatist Baba Brinkman forges a new masterpiece out of the rawest material etched on vellum, or carved into clay tablets. Just like the most heart-wrenching songs by Eminem or Kanye West, these ancient Tales are infused with lust and betrayal, infidelity, greed, jealousy, ambition, and the endless struggles between men and women seeking happiness.
